Our Softball Rules are fairly easy to remember:

Be sure to discuss these rules with your team. Each player should be familiar with these rules before beginning play. Please remember that this is a recreation program, and you are out here to have fun!

1. Time limits. The time limit rule means no new inning will start after the time limit has been reached. The time limit is 80 minutes. If you exceed the time limit, the team in the lead wins.

2. Pitching mat will be used. If the ball lands on the plate or mat, it is a strike.

3. Foul language or other unsportsmanlike conduct is grounds for ejection without warning from the umpires.

4. Courtesy runners are allowed. One per inning, with the runner being of the same gender.

5. Both men and women can hit from the side of the plate of their choice. Batters will start their at bat with a one ball, one strike count. If you hit a foul ball with two strikes, you are out.

7. Defense: A team may play 10 players on defense to start a game, but at least four must be women. A team may have 11 batters (designated hitter).  If a team does not have at least four women at gametime, they must play the field with 9 players, including at least three women. No DH will be allowed in this case.

8. You may not bat three men in a row, unless agreed upon by both coaches PRIOR to the game, due to less than four women on a team. Both teams must follow the same rules.

9. Runners cannot run into or over fielders. If, in the umpire's opinion, you crash into a fielder, you will be out and possibly ejected.

10. Each game is six innings. If, after five innings, either team is ahead by more than ten (10) runs, the game is over.

11. If any male players are walked (four balls), that player is awarded second base.

12. No stealing bases. A base runner must remain on the base until a pitched ball is hit. Defensive outfielders must stand in the grass of the outfield at all times (no moving in to the infield).

13. Teams are expected to be at the fields and ready to begin play at the time designated on the schedule. If at the starting time a team has the minimum number of players then the game must begin as soon as possible. 10 minutes after the original starting time the game is forfeited and a win is awarded to the opponent.

14. All players play at your own risk. Neither the GPS Coed Softball League nor the Town of Gilbert is not responsible for any injuries incurred due to your participation in the league.

15. Have fun!

Sometimes the only thing fair in life, is a ball hit between 1st and 3rd.
